Humanitarian Essay Contest 2023-2024


The Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Essay Contest, sponsored by The Center for Race, Ethnicity & Diversity Education (CREDE) at Elon University and Elon Teaching Fellow Scholars. The essay contest utilizes one of Martin Luther King’s most powerful communication methods, the written word, to demonstrate the value of the contributions of one person.

The contest is open to all middle school students currently enrolled in the Alamance Burlington School System and the Guilford County School System. Winners will be recognized at the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Luncheon on Friday, January 19, 2024, at 12:00pm in McKinnon Hall of the Moseley Center at Elon University.

*All applications and essays must be emailed to [email protected].  Please be sure to include your application so we know your school, administrator/teacher, and contact information.  It is due to the email address above by Monday, December 4th, 2023, at 5:00 pm EST*.

Essay Prompt

"Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision of radical thoughts and radical change for building a better world, imagine a future where a new generation of activists and leaders take up the responsibility of social justice. Write an essay that explores the innovative and unconventional ideas they bring to the table, the challenges they face, and the transformative impact they have on the world as they work towards a more equitable and inclusive world." 

 

Essay Criteria

2 pages, double-spaced, typed, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font. Submitted essays must be emailed, along with this application, no later than Monday, December 4th, 2023, at 5:00 pm EST.

Notification of Results

All winners will be notified no later than Monday, December 11th, 2023. 

(Note: There will be 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners)

 

Prizes

The first-place winner will receive a prize of $200, 2nd place receives $150, and the 3rd place winner will receive $100. Winners will also receive Elon Phoenix paraphernalia, and complimentary tickets to an Elon home basketball game. The winner, their family, and school representative will also be invited to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Luncheon Program on Friday, January 19th, 2024, at 12:00 pm in McKinnon Hall of the Moseley Center at Elon University.
